Why would you tow a 914 like that

D esert gas station model cars are the best, so many oddball castings to be found. Also unless that 914 is missing its transaxle that’s poor towing form.

Assuming it’s in neutral, not a big deal.

Though that car looks nice enough for a full trailer/flatbed. Maybe it was just purchased and towing home.

A buddy of mine thought that with his pickup once. A completely destroyed transmission determined that was a lie......

My theory is weight. I just went through this bringing the 240 home.

The U-haul tow dolly weighs about 500 pounds while the drive on / drive off trailer weighs like 2500. U-Haul won’t rent you a trailer unless the combined weight of trailer and car being towed is less than 80% of your vehicles tow rating.

A 914 weighs about 2100 lbs according to W ikipedia, so using U-Haul’s 80% rule, you only need a towing capacity of 3250 lbs for dolly towing but you’d need a capacity of 5750 lbs for a full trailer. That’s the difference between a lot of small pickups, CUVs, and SUVs and a 1/2 ton or greater pickup.

My friend used to disconnect his driveshaft when he flat-towed his Miata.

I f the 914 transaxle has oil in it, it don’t matter.

An automatic transmission maybe another subject.

Automatic? In the 914 the trans will rotate, but there’s no load on it. I’ve seen many towed to the track on dollies.

His was an auto so you’re probably right!

If you’ve seen it be fine then I’ll defer to your expertise! His was an auto, so that may be the difference.

The 914 definitely isn’t an auto....wasn’t an option!  Also the axle runs through the trans so I believe it’s always got oil.

I wouldn’t. I’d trailer it.

I’d really like the chance to drive a 914 sometime.
